l’eglise monolith à aubeterre

A while ago I visited the ‘Eglise Monolith’ (monolith church) in Aubeterre, a small village not too far from where I live. It’s incredible. A huge cathedral-like underground church, complete with burial chamber, really big (as in, breathtakingly enormous) stone pillars through the centre, and of course an underground tomb. The burial chamber was fascinating; being stone, the hundreds of bodies were wrapped in shrouds and placed one on top of the other in distinctively shaped hand-hewn holes. The immense silence of the place was literally awing. So was the cold, and the ancient watchfulness of those glacial walls. I’d (maybe?) love to spend a night there. Ghosts, anyone?

  1. Beautiful light and pix of a grand place, love the mix of finished and unfinished stone work. Ghosts? Probably friendly ones only!! Harald

  2. Great photos, Elisa! Just imagining what wonderful sights your young eyes are recording. The world is beautiful! Witnessing history, whether places, museums, art, etc just makes this planet a truly wondrous place. Enjoy each day! Love, Mummu.
