A while ago I visited the ‘Eglise Monolith’ (monolith church) in Aubeterre, a small village not too far from where I live. It’s incredible. A huge cathedral-like underground church, complete with burial chamber, really big (as in, breathtakingly enormous) stone pillars through the centre, and of course an underground tomb. The burial chamber was fascinating; being stone, the hundreds of bodies were wrapped in shrouds and placed one on top of the other in distinctively shaped hand-hewn holes. The immense silence of the place was literally awing. So was the cold, and the ancient watchfulness of those glacial walls. I’d (maybe?) love to spend a night there. Ghosts, anyone?
